MBBS in Europe for Indian Students 2027: Fees, NMC Rules & Real Costs

Choose EU for wider options; non-EU is cheaper but mainly for India. For India, confirm NEET, 54-month study, 12-month same-institution internship, and English teaching. Get it in writing and check the college’s FMGE record.

You did not get the seat in India, the private college quote is around a crore, and MBBS in Europe now looks like the sensible move. It can be. But "Europe" on a shortlist usually hides two very different degrees, and picking the wrong one costs you either ₹50 lakh or your right to work as a doctor outside India.

Here is the split that decides everything else, then the numbers, the NMC rules and the checks to run before you pay a deposit.

Why does "Europe" mean two completely different medical degrees?

EU / EEA route Non-EU route
Countries: Italy, Poland, Hungary, Czech Republic, Romania, Bulgaria, Latvia, Lithuania Countries: Georgia, Armenia, Russia, Belarus
Entry: Entrance test (IMAT, university exam) + Class 12 marks Entry: Class 12 marks; usually no entrance test
Tuition/year: €5,000–€18,000 Tuition/year: US$4,000–8,000
Degree: MD / Medical Doctor, recognised across the EU and EEA Degree: National medical degree, valid for Indian licensure
Can you practise in Europe? Yes, subject to language and work-permit rules Can you practise in Europe? No automatic right
Six-year all-in: ₹45 lakh – ₹1.2 crore Six-year all-in: ₹30–45 lakh

Both routes can lead to a licence to practise in India. Only one of them keeps European practice on the table. If your plan is to return to India and clear FMGE, the non-EU route is cheaper and the trade-off is rational. If you want the option of specialising in Europe, a non-EU degree closes that door on day one.

Which European countries actually admit Indian students to an English-taught course?

Country Language Entrance test Tuition/year Notes
Italy (public) English IMAT €200–€4,000 Fees are income-linked via ISEE; the cheapest EU-recognised medical degree available to Indians
Poland English University entrance exam €12,000–€15,000 Large, well-established Indian cohort
Hungary English University entrance exam €16,000–€18,000 Semmelweis, Debrecen, Pécs, Szeged
Czech Republic English University entrance exam €12,000–€15,000 Charles, Masaryk, Palacký
Romania English Marks-based / interview €5,000–€8,000 Lowest-cost EU option without an entrance test
Bulgaria English Biology + Chemistry test €8,000–€9,000 Sofia, Plovdiv, Varna, Pleven
Latvia / Lithuania English Marks-based €12,000–€17,000 Riga Stradiņš, LSMU Kaunas
Georgia English None US$5,000–8,000 Non-EU; strongest FMGE record among all foreign destinations
Armenia English None US$4,000–6,000 Non-EU; low cost

Italy is the outlier worth a hard look. A public Italian medical school charges near-nominal tuition because Italian public universities set fees against declared family income, so the six-year tuition bill can land below what a single year costs in Hungary. The price of entry is the IMAT, sat in the year you apply, and it is genuinely competitive. Students who are willing to prepare for one more entrance exam get the best cost-to-value ratio in Europe.

Why are Germany, France and Switzerland the wrong answer for most Indian students?

These three appear on nearly every "top MBBS in Europe" list, and for a Class 12 Indian applicant they are close to unusable.

Germany teaches medicine in German. You need C1-level proficiency plus TMS, and non-EU applicants compete for a small share of seats. Free tuition is real; access is not. It also fails the NMC's English-medium condition, which means the degree may not count for Indian registration.

France runs the PASS/LAS system in French, with a first-year filter that eliminates most of the cohort. Searches for mbbs in france for indian students fees are common, and the honest answer is that there is no English-taught route into French medicine for Indian school-leavers.

Switzerland restricts medical places to residents and EU/EFTA candidates, teaches in German, French or Italian, and applies a numerus clausus aptitude test. Queries around mbbs in switzerland for indian students fees have no realistic answer because there is effectively no seat to price.

If any of the three is on your shortlist, ask for the exact seat quota open to Indian applicants and the language level required before you spend another hour on it.

What does the NMC actually require before your degree counts in India?

This is the section that decides whether six years and ₹50 lakh convert into a licence. Under the Foreign Medical Graduate Licentiate Regulations, 2021, your course must satisfy every one of the following. Failing one is enough to void the degree for Indian registration.

  • 54 months minimum of academic instruction — roughly 4.5 years, excluding internship. Any accelerated or "fast-track" four-year programme is disqualified.
  • 12 months of internship completed at the same institution, or at minimum the same country. Coming home to do the internship in India is not permitted.
  • The entire course taught in English. Bilingual or partly local-language teaching fails.
  • No split of coursework or internship between institutions or countries.
  • A qualifying NEET score obtained before you take admission. A student who goes abroad without NEET cannot register as a doctor in India later. The qualifying percentile is enough; the rank is irrelevant.
  • On return: clear FMGE (transitioning to NExT), then complete a 12-month CRMI internship at an NMC-approved Indian institution before a State Medical Council grants permanent registration.

The 12-month internship condition is where EU degrees most often break, because several European curricula fold clinical training into the sixth year instead of running a separate post-graduation internship year. Before you pay a deposit, ask the university admissions office for a written statement confirming the academic duration in months and the structure of the internship year. If they will not put it in an email, treat that as the answer.

What does studying MBBS in Europe cost end-to-end, not just tuition?

Tuition is roughly 60% of the real bill. Here is the fee structure for MBBS in Europe with everything included, over six years, in Indian rupees.

Destination Tuition (6 yrs) Living + insurance + travel All-in total
Italy (public, post-IMAT) ₹2–20 lakh ₹35–45 lakh ₹40–60 lakh
Romania ₹32–48 lakh ₹25–32 lakh ₹58–78 lakh
Bulgaria ₹50–56 lakh ₹28–35 lakh ₹78 lakh – 90 lakh
Poland / Czech Republic ₹75–95 lakh ₹35–45 lakh ₹1.1–1.4 crore
Hungary ₹1.0–1.1 crore ₹35–45 lakh ₹1.35–1.55 crore
Georgia ₹28–40 lakh ₹16–22 lakh ₹45–60 lakh
Armenia ₹22–32 lakh ₹15–20 lakh ₹37–52 lakh

Budget separately for residence permit renewals, apostille and document attestation, one or two India trips a year, and FMGE coaching in your final two years. Together these add ₹4–7 lakh across the degree, and they are rarely quoted upfront.

So what is the cheapest country to study MBBS in Europe?

On sticker price, Armenia and Georgia. On value per rupee, a public Italian university after clearing IMAT, because you get an EU-recognised degree for close to non-EU money. Romania sits between the two and needs no entrance exam.

Cheapest is the wrong single criterion, though. A ₹35 lakh degree from a university with a weak FMGE record is more expensive than a ₹60 lakh degree you can actually practise on. Price the outcome, not the invoice.

How many Indian graduates from Europe actually clear FMGE?

The overall FMGE pass rate in 2024 was 25.80%, from roughly 79,000 candidates. Country-level outcomes vary sharply. Georgia recorded the strongest performance among major destinations at 35.65% — 1,505 of 4,221 Georgian-trained candidates cleared the exam — with individual universities ranging from around 28% to above 60%. Russia sat near 29.5%. (Source: NBEMS country-wise FMGE data.)

Read those numbers as a warning about university selection rather than country selection. Within Georgia alone the spread between the best and worst performing institutions is more than 30 percentage points. NBEMS publishes pass data university by university, free to access. Pull it for the exact college you are considering before you compare it to any other.

Can you stay and practise in Europe after you graduate?

Three separate answers, and they depend entirely on which route you took.

In the EU: a degree from an EU medical school is recognised across member states, but recognition is not employment. Specialty training posts require local-language certification, usually B2 to C1, and non-EU nationals need a work or residence permit. Plan for two years of language study alongside your clinical years if this is the goal.

With a non-EU degree: Georgian, Russian, Armenian and Belarusian qualifications carry no automatic European practice right. Individual countries may assess them case by case, but there is no pathway you can rely on.

For the United States: since 2024, ECFMG certification requires your medical school to be accredited by an agency recognised by WFME, not merely listed in the World Directory. Verify this before enrolling if a US residency is part of the plan.

Back in India: clear FMGE or NExT, complete the 12-month CRMI, then apply to your State Medical Council for permanent registration.

How do you verify a university before you pay a deposit?

Work through this before any money moves. It takes an afternoon.

  1. Find the university in the World Directory of Medical Schools at wdoms.org and check the sponsor note.
  2. Confirm the country's accrediting agency holds WFME recognition, on the WFME site.
  3. Get the academic duration in months, in writing, and confirm it exceeds 54.
  4. Get the internship structure in writing — where it happens, how long, whether international students are included.
  5. Ask for written confirmation that the full course is taught in English, including clinical years.
  6. Pull the NBEMS university-wise FMGE data for that specific institution, not the country average.
  7. Ask the university directly, by email, whether Indian graduates from previous batches have obtained local medical registration.
  8. Ask for contact details of two current Indian students in years 4–6, and speak to them directly.

What is the timeline for the 2027 intake?

When What
Now – Feb Shortlist countries and universities; begin IMAT prep if targeting Italy
Jan – Mar Register for the year's entrance tests; assemble and apostille documents
May NEET-UG — a qualifying score is mandatory before admission
Jun – Jul Applications close at most European universities; IMAT is typically held mid-year
Jul – Aug Offer letters, tuition deposit, student visa application
Sep – Oct Main intake begins

Visa appointment slots for European consulates in India tighten sharply from July. Build four to six weeks of slack into the plan.

Documents to have ready before you apply: Class 10 and 12 marksheets, NEET scorecard, passport valid for the full course, birth certificate, migration and transfer certificates, medical fitness certificate, police clearance certificate, parent's bank statement or proof of funds, and passport photographs. Marksheets and certificates need apostille or embassy attestation, which takes two to three weeks — start it before your offer letter arrives, not after.

FAQs

Is NEET compulsory for MBBS in Europe?
For admission, many European universities do not require it. For practising in India afterwards, it is non-negotiable — you must hold a qualifying NEET score obtained before you take admission abroad. Without it you cannot register as a doctor in India, regardless of where you studied.

Is an MBBS degree from Europe valid in India?
Yes, if the course satisfies every FMGL 2021 condition and you clear FMGE or NExT followed by a 12-month Indian internship. Validity is a property of the course structure, not the country.

Which is the best country in Europe for MBBS?
For an Indian licence at the lowest cost, Georgia. For an EU-recognised degree at the lowest cost, a public Italian university after IMAT. For an English-taught EU degree without an entrance exam, Romania.

Can I do MBBS in Europe under ₹50 lakh?
Yes. Armenia, Georgia and Italy's public universities all fit within that range all-in over six years. Romania is close.

Do I need IELTS for MBBS in Europe?
Most universities do not require it, though some accept it in place of their own English test. Confirm per university rather than assuming.

Which European countries should I not shortlist?
Germany, France and Switzerland, unless you already have C1-level German or French and are prepared for their domestic entrance systems.
Which route fits your NEET score and budget?

Most students who regret this decision did not pick a bad country. They picked a university nobody checked, on a timeline that was already running out, because somebody told them seats were filling fast.

You have more time than that. Cut your list to two universities. For each one, get the course length in months and the internship structure in an email from the university itself, and pull that college's FMGE numbers from NBEMS. If both hold up, you are choosing between two real options instead of guessing.

Next step: pick your two shortlisted universities and run all eight verification checks above on each of them before you speak to anyone about deposits. If you want the NBEMS university-wise FMGE data and written NMC-compliance confirmations pulled for your shortlist, and bring your Class 12 marksheet and NEET scorecard.

Not sure whether the EU or non-EU route is right for you?

Public medical university tuition in Italy runs about 200 to 2,500 euros per year, and it is income-based: the amount you pay is calculated from your family's assessed income through the ISEE system. Landing near the bottom of that range is not automatic. It depends on your ISEE Parificato and DSU documentation being prepared and filed correctly. Check your eligibility, then book a consultation, and we will make sure your income paperwork positions you for the lowest fee you qualify for.
